LifeLine’s SW!TCH Futures programme supports young people to build a better future for themselves through weekly one-to-one mentoring to foster confidence and self-determination along with a range of positive activities that improve wellbeing, teach new skills, and help young people make new friends.

Names and identifying details have been changed to protect the privacy of individuals.

Jo joined LifeLine’s SW!TCH programme at a pivotal moment in her life. When we first met Jo, she was quiet, withdrawn, and disengaged from activities. She had isolated herself in her bedroom and struggled to connect with her family. Her friendships were negatively influenced, and she had previously gone missing when she ran away from home with a friend. She had also been truanting from school, often skipping classes with that same friend.

Our first step was to establish a trusting relationship. Jo was paired with a mentor who focused on her preferences and interests. Through engaging, positive mentoring sessions, we aimed to encourage Jo to step out of her shell. It wasn’t long before Jo agreed to attend a half-term activity of Laser Tag. It was a significant moment for her, as she attended alone and, in doing so, built new, positive friendships.

With the support of her mentor, Jo also received career guidance, which helped her focus on her aspirations to study Sports Science at college. She was provided with information about local college open days and encouraged to attend, which she did enthusiastically.

One of the key activities that helped Jo blossom was attending girls’ football on Fridays. She started attending regularly and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. As she became more comfortable in her new surroundings, Jo developed into a positive influence within her friendship group, offering her friends healthy advice and guidance.

Another noteworthy change was in Jo’s relationship with her family. She started spending more time with them, socialising more and isolating herself less. Her confidence grew, and she began to display maturity in her decision-making, particularly by distancing herself from unhealthy relationships that were previously a negative influence on her.

As a result of her progress, Jo was chosen to become a LifeLine Ambassador, which was a reflection of her personal growth, leadership potential, and the positive changes she had made. Her school also acknowledged her transformation by awarding her a commendation from the Head, further highlighting her journey of improvement.

Jo’s story is one of resilience and empowerment. Her commitment to change, combined with the support of LifeLine, has led to remarkable achievements. Jo is now focused on completing her GCSEs and plans to pursue Sports Studies at college.

For her next steps, Jo will continue to develop her leadership skills as a SW!TCH Ambassador. She is also determined to complete her GCSEs and pursue her dream of studying Sports Science.
